Are you an analytical thinker who enjoys working on intelligent computer systems? Would you like to know more about topics such as data mining, machine learning and information retrieval?
If so, the master in Artificial Intelligence is the right choice for you. You’ll learn how to use and develop computer systems that can learn from experience, recognise patterns in vasts amounts of data and reason strategically in complex decision-making situations. The programme is very flexible, which means you can tailor it to your interests and ambitions. You’ll also have the opportunity to work on real-life cases provided by different organisations, giving you all the preparation you need to pursue a career as an artificial intelligence specialist at a research institute or company.
The Artificial Intelligence master’s programme focuses on the development and application of computer systems that simulate human intelligence, learning, reasoning and collaboration. These systems are used to solve challenging problems in today's world.
The master's programme covers the following research topics:
data mining to explore relations in datasets,
multi-agent systems of collaborating autonomous intelligent systems,
situated agents, such as robots, that can operate in environments using uncertain observations,
formal techniques for reasoning in agents,
intelligent techniques for playing and solving board games and controlling virtual characters in commercial video games,
extracting interesting and non-trivial information and knowledge from unstructured text,
machine learning to find patterns and make predictions in and about data.
Artificial intelligence has a high impact on society. It plays a key role in some of the technological applications that have become indispensible to us.
These applications include data mining (e.g. detection of fraudulent credit card transactions), automated trading software in real markets, interactive computer games, intelligent network routing on the internet, robotic space exploration, sensor networks for medical applications and many more. This master’s programme teaches you to become an artificial intelligence expert who is capable of dealing with both current and future challenges in this highly challenging field.

Quantum computing is a real buzz in computing science and beyond. Although quantum computing hardware is still in its infancy, scientists, companies and governments want to be ready for the real thing.
If you want to prepare for the advantages quantum computers may offer in computing, and specifically in the fields of data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning, then Maastricht University is the place to be. We are the only Dutch university offering a specialisation in Quantum Computing as part of Data Science for Decision Making and Artificial Intelligence master’s programmes. If you finish your specialisation successfully, it will be mentioned on your master’s diploma.
